Given the bad weather during the growing seasons in Northern California this year, we were all waiting with anticipation for the new Meyer Lemon Olive Oil from Katz & Co. Wet weather early in the year had a serious impact on the olive trees, and the yield of olives was significantly smaller than normal - as it turned out though, the olives that were harvested were laden with flavor. This weather also delayed the maturation of the meyer lemon crop, which was subsequently hit with a hard freeze just as the lemons were maturing. Albert and Kim were able to harvest enough lemons to produce only a limited amount of meyer lemon olive oil. There is a silver lining to all of these clouds though, it is some of the most flavorful meyer lemon olive oil they've ever made. The aroma of sweet meyer lemon seems to jump out of the bottle and on to your palate even before you take a sip. The silky green oil seems to gracefully, and smoothly take a back seat until the meyer lemon flavor fully envelops the palate, and then it quickly finishes with a pepper packed crescendo, the fusion of two flavors lingering long on the tongue. Here the Suisun Valley shines as organic Meyer Lemons are wedded to Taggiasca olives that next year will receive their organic certification. This year's pressing is probably the most fresh and flavorful example of a citrus olive oil we've ever tasted. It is perfect for drizzling over fresh or grilled vegetables or fish, it is a heavenly condiment for halibut, sea bass and even wild salmon. This delicious Meyer Lemon Olive Oil can even stand alone as a salad dressing with a pinch of fleur de sel and a grind of fresh pepper. There is a plethora of Meyer lemon olive oil coming out of California these days, most made with uninteresting, buttery late-harvest mission olive blends. The flavor of Meyer Lemon, and in many cases the combined flavor of Meyer Lemon and regular lemons, buries the mild flavor of the other olive oil.
